Biden puts forward Lizarraga, Uyeda as SEC commissioner nominees

By John Filar Atwood

The Biden Administration announced that it has nominated Jaime Lizarraga to fill the seat soon to be vacated by Commissioner Allison Herren Lee, and Mark Uyeda to fill Commissioner Elad Rosiman’s seat. Roisman departed the Commission in mid-January, and Lee has said she will leave at the end of her term in June.

According to the White House announcement, Lizarraga currently serves as senior adviser to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) where he handles financial markets, housing, international financial institutions, immigration, and small business policy issues. He also is Pelosi’s liaison to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Lizarraga previously worked at both the SEC and the Treasury Department, as well as on the Democratic staff of the House Financial Services Committee. Lizarraga was involved with the drafting of the Dodd-Frank Act. His other legislative efforts include the Build Back Better Act, the American Rescue Plan, COVID relief legislation, the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, and the Economic Emergency and Stabilization Act of 2008.

Uyeda has worked at the SEC since 2006, and currently is on detail to the Senate Banking Committee where he serves as securities counsel. At the Commission, Uyeda has filled a number of positions including senior adviser to former Chair Jay Clayton and then-Acting Chair Michael Piwowar. He has also been an Assistant Director and Senior Special Counsel in the SEC’s Division of Investment Management.

Prior to his tenure at the SEC, Uyeda was Chief Adviser to the California Corporations Commissioner. He also worked in private practice with O’Melveny & Myers LLP and Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP.
